Babylon was a city-state in ancient Mesopotamia, located in present-day Iraq, approximately 85 km south of Baghdad. It was a major center of culture, trade, and political power in the region during the 18th and 17th centuries BCE, and later became the capital of the Babylonian Empire from roughly 605-539 BCE. The city was renowned for its impressive architecture, including the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Babylon was also a center of learning, with important contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and literature. The term "Babylon" is sometimes used metaphorically to refer to a place of great wealth, power, or vice.
